Whistle Down the Wind
Whistle Down the Wind facts and figures
  • Whistle Down the Wind broke all Aldwych Theatre Box Office records.
  • Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman were the UK's No1 Songwriters for No Matter What in Music Week for July, August and September 1998.
  • The Whistle Down the Wind Album goes Gold in the first week of release in the UK.
  • No Matter What was released by Boyzone in 1998 and after going double platinum, became the 1998 No 1 hit single across Europe.
  • The production opened on 1st July 1998.
  • The production recouped over 50% of its London capitalisation in less than 5 months.
  • Over 400,000 people saw the production in its first year.
  • Whistle Down the Wind was the only major West End show to have live snakes as part of the cast. 3 of the resident family of Bull snakes were used each performance and kept at the Theatre in an especially temperature controlled vivarium. The chosen snakes each night depended on a number of things including where in its shedding cycle the snake was.
  • One of the children cast celebrated his 9th birthday on 09/09/99 at the theatre at 9 o'clock.
  • Over 120 children have trod the boards at the Aldwych Theatre in the show's first year. The children can only do 40 days per year if 13 or under and 80 days if older than 13. Olivia Newton John's niece was in the children's cast.
  • Celebrating the opening of the production at the first night, along with Andrew and Jim were Hayley Mills (who starred in the original film) and her entire family including Sir John Mills and Mary Hayley Bell (who wrote the novel).
